Hi.
I hope this is the right place to post this?
I cannot read German, I only speak/read English, French, Spanish and Greek.
I have a Landcruiser J9 Automatic RHD.
When I move the gear to "HL", and then back to "H", the centre differential will not disengage and the light stays on. If I then reverse 30 metres and then go forwards 30 metres in a straight line, and again, and again, then on about the fourth attempt the light will go off. I have to do this every time I use "HL".
Also, when it is in the "HL" mode, if I put the steering on full lock, then the car will stop until I put more power on to force it to move. This also makes a slight grinding noise, almost like brakes are being applied to the front wheels.
Also when it is the "HL" mode the car makes a whining/whistling noise from the front when driving along. Is this normal?
I have also tried to put the car in to the "LL" mode, but it does not seem to work. Here is what I do - I put the main auto stick into neutral, then I put my foot on the brake and put the small stick into "LL", then I take my foot of the brake, but the car does not move - it just remains in neutral.
I have only had the car a month, so this is the first time I have used the 4WD system. But it's starting to snow now...
Thanks for any help. |

hi, sounds partly a bit strange to me.
Zitat:
When I move the gear to "HL", and then back to "H", the centre differential will not disengage and the light stays on. If I then reverse 30 metres and then go forwards 30 metres in a straight line, and again, and again, then on about the fourth attempt the light will go off. I have to do this every time I use "HL".
normally it shouldn't be necessary to drive backwards, some steering should be enough
Zitat: Also, when it is in the "HL" mode, if I put the steering on full lock, then the car will stop until I put more power on to force it to move. This also makes a slight grinding noise, almost like brakes are being applied to the front wheels.
never use "HL" on hard surface like asphalt
Zitat: I have also tried to put the car in to the "LL" mode, but it does not seem to work. Here is what I do - I put the main auto stick into neutral, then I put my foot on the brake and put the small stick into "LL", then I take my foot of the brake, but the car does not move - it just remains in neutral.
you have to put the auto stick back into D (or R, 2, L)after shifting the small one to "LL"
Zitat: I have only had the car a month, so this is the first time I have used the 4WD system. But it's starting to snow now...
your car has permanent 4wd, so at snowy conditions and on-street-use, there is normally no shifting into "HL" or "LL" necessary....only to free a stuck vehicle

Hi,
that´s really quite strange. Maybe there is a problem with the system. I had such problems with my earlier car-a Nissan Terrano 2, but it has a totally different 4WD system. Check it in a Toyota service station.
I drive a LC120 and at common conditions, even on snowy streets and fields, there is usually no need to use differential lock or the low range transmission.
I have driven several different 4WD systems (Audi, Subaru, Nissan, Mercedes) and Toyota has one of the best - Audi is also very good, but there are no real offroaders:)
Regards

>>normally it shouldn't be necessary to drive
>>backwards, some steering should be enough
Quote From owner's manual:
"If the indicator light does not go off when you shift the transfer into "H", drive STRAIGHT AHEAD while accelerating or decelerating, or drive in reverse."
Quote from the dealer that I phoned today:
"If the light stays on, just reverse it a few metres on a flat surface in a STRAIGHT LINE."
>>never use "HL" on hard surface like asphalt
>>your car has permanent 4wd, so at snowy conditions
>>and on-street-use, there is normally no shifting
>>into "HL" or "LL" necessary....only to free a stuck vehicle
Quote from the dealer:
"You should really only need to use HL off-road".
Quote from the owner's manual:
"HL (HIGH SPEED, center differential locked): Use this for NORMAL driving on WET, icy or snow-covered ROADS... The shift from H to HL can be done at ANY vehicle speed".
>>you have to put the auto stick back into D
>>(or R, 2, L)after shifting the small one to LL
Thanks for that, I wanted to confirm that I needed to put the auto stick into D, I was worried this might grind the gears if I was wrong.
This is because the owner's manual doesn't mention putting it into "D": "To shift between HL and LL, stop the vehicle and put the transmission in N. With your foot holding down the brake pedal, move the four-wheel drive control lever (into LL)".
Do you have to put the auto stick into N before putting the four-wheel drive control into LL or can you stay in D - I'm not sure if by transmission it means the auto-stick or the 4wd selector?
One last thing - when I try to lock the rear diff, the red light flashes but never comes on permanently - it just keeps flashing, but according to the owner's manual, it says "The indicator light will blink when the switch is turned on. Wait a few seconds for the system to complete operation. After the differential is locked, the light will stop blinking and remain on."
Is the manual wrong, or is their something wrong with my rear-diff lock?
Thanks. |
