I just discovered that Eric from Campteq is back in business with an upgraded version uf the pop top. How‘s your top working out for you so far? Any issues or complains?

Cheers, Neil

Hey Neil,
The upper and lower aluminum are original, but we had to redo the tent material and mosquito netting. We also replaced the hinge since the original broke on the previous owner in Baja and he put on gate hinges that we replaced with a beefy piano hinge that is bolted and sikaflexed into place instead of the Tig welded original that didn't hold up to the flexing. We replaced the gas struts with stronger ones.
The whole top is sikaflexed on instead of bolts and that's held up perfectly. No issues.
The back tends to leak in the rain so we added a back flap for that and the sides leak so the new design with a little "skirt" of material mostly takes care of that I bet.
So, all of that being said, I think the new ones take care of most of the issues.

This week we put together an updated walkthrough of the truck. After 2 years since we cut the roof and a year and a half on the road we figured it was time for an update!

I appreciate your honest respond! I‘m glad he worked out most of the flaws. Unfortunately though, there‘s no Campteq website and it‘s almost impossible to find details of the improved design. I might just take a look at one when I‘m in the US again. So far, Campteq is still the only one offering a pop-top for the 80 and (apparently soon) 100 series Land Cruiser in North America.

Thanks again and happy travels!

Supertramp,
Check out a company called "Expedition Centre" in Australia. They just made one for an 80 series and I hear they might make their way to the USA at some point to be put on sale. The Troopy tops are called Mulgo.

This week we explore Tucson, ride bikes, visit an air-cooled car museum and decide that we should do something different... and go Overlanding.

In realtime we're waiting out a storm in Patagonia, but this week in the videos we look back at our FJ40 roadtrip to New Mexico where it was much colder!

This week we keep getting colder in New Mexico as a storm front moves in, but we can't have a bad time while driving this old truck.

This week we wake up to white stuff all over and Tonto decides that if he's going to continue this road trip he wants a spa day at the local autoparts store.

We did an interview with the traveling duo at Impact Overland. These brothers have a few extra challenges to overcome than most.
