hier mal einige Erfahrungen aus Südafrika. Alle haben den 2,8GD, mit 1 Ausnahme 2,4.
Hilux GD-6 D/C 4x4 Manual or Auto ?We have a Prado 3.0 d4d and a Hilux 2.8GD and yes the 2.8 is miles ahead of the 3.0d4d in performance and smoothness of the gearbox but when we leave for a long trip the Hilux stays at home. To me, the Prado TX 3.0 is the winner in the Prado:Fortuner choice .
Space,comfort,gravel roadholding and the standard 150l fuel tank.
I've driven an Hilux 2,8 automatik for 2 days / 500km - pretty much behaving, dirt roads around Swakopmund - is on 11.2 l/100km on the OBC. As I've mentioned elsewhere, the auto box is the best part about the car. quite impressive.
You really need to go and drive them both and decide, personally I prefer the auto but have to say the iMT is very good - by far the best MT in any bakkie I've driven. As far as fuel consumption is concerned the only input I can give is from towing my boat with my mates auto for about 700kms and it returned figures of 14l/100kms.
I drove both .... decided on the manual.
Before you buy the auto make sure you test drive one. I went from a manual D4D to the Auto Hilux 2.8 and I am underwhelmed. Don't know if it's the ratios or the high pitch sound of the engine you hear before change over but it feels a little like driving a quad bike. Don't get me wrong change over is smooth but I end up putting the gear lever in manual mode most of the time and selecting gears myself. But then the bakkie overrides my selection most of the time anyway. I have a Discovery 4 and BMW and don't get the same feeling from their auto box.
initially I wanted to buy the auto, then test drove the manual immediately after driving the auto. The manual feels livelier than the auto. was an easy choice to buy the manual.
Hinweis: Beim Verbrauch gibt es große Unterschiede. Das hängt natürlich von einigen Faktoren ab - Bereifung, extra Gewicht, Stadt, Land oder ob jemand auf der Farm wohnt mit zig-km gravel road. Ein 2,4 ist auch dabei. Im Großen und Ganzen sind die Jungs zufrieden mit ihrem Hilux.

Got the extracab 4x4. Average 10,5L/100. Got 3000 km on now. Thats a mixture of driving steep and farm terrain and when i get on the tar road its 140kph.
Hmm, a bit better than my V6: Done only 1300km, 11,9L/100 open road @ 120 without speedo cruise (auto) and 17,5 L, town driving only...
Driving a 2,4 and getting Ave 8,54l/100km, best thus far was 7,2l. This includes long distance, town and towing ☺. Pulls like a train, only running out of steam when trying to overtake above 140km/h. Sorry, no thread for the 2,4 guys YET
4x4 manual double cab. 9,1L open road . 11,1 L/100km town.
4X4 Manual D/C with RSI canopy. 6500km so far, average to date is 9.0 l/100km, mainly open road driving.
2.8GD6 DC 4x4 Auto, Did a round trip Centurion to Sun City this week it showed 8.8l/100km@ 120Km Cruise Control, Car Logbook Results after 5157Km

Avg 10.04l/100Km
Max 11.33l/100Km (Wife doing the school runs)
I just hit 10 000 km in the 2.8 DC manual.
Since new - overall consumption is ---- 9,7 L/ 100 km !!
This is a mix of Town driving ( 55 % ) high way driving ( 40 % ) and towing ( 5%) - APPROXIMATELY !!
Don't know how you guys manage that fuel consumption ?I have the 2.8 manual dc 4x4 and my average for 5000 km is 12,6 l/100 km / l . No traffic at all. I stay on a farm 35 km from nearest town. I do about 50 % gravel road @ 60 - 110 km/h and the rest "highway" at 130 - 140 km/h. I do not use the vehicles computer for fuel consumption, but gps kilometers travelled divided by actual litres diesel every fill-up. I have an Ironman replacement bullbar, and " tralies" as extras on the vehicle. I religiously keep a logbook for this vehicle. Average consumption over 5138 km was 12,6 litre per 100km.
My almost fully kitted 2.8GD6 4x4 Manual - Urban cycle driving very conservatively 100-120km/h is averaging 10 L/100km at the moment.
I've done 19552 kilometers in my 2.8 manual and my fuel consumption is as follow:
Life to date average: (8.86L/100km)
Best (7.85 L/100km)
Worst (10.45 L/100km)
I tend to be the one overtaking other vehicles on the road. My km are a mixed bag of short and long distance travel.

Erfahrung eines 2,8 AT im Hängerbetrieb.
TOW REPORT: Did just over 700kms over the long weekend, trailer was around 1.6To with all the fuel and extras, five adults with kit, aircon on . Set the cruise control mostly on 100/105kph and got 14l/100kms, first pic shows 1500 @ 100kph but that is in 6th on a long flat/downhill, mostly it sat at 2000 in 5th.
For the last 150kms(better roads) or so I set the cruise control at 115 and the overall consumption ended up at 14.5 l/100kms over 720kms.
All I can say is that the 2.8 auto tows very well, brilliant!! better than the D4D and different but better than the FJ, you just dial in your speed and go no fuss, the engine just buzzes along and the gearbox sorts the correct gear out...all the time. Overall a very nice, relaxed and comfortable drive(although my daughter complained of a sore butt sitting in the middle). If I had the choice I would rather tow with the Hilux compared to the FJ.......mainly because of the gearbox/cruise control combination but the engine is a real winner and the torque makes the towing a pleasure!!
ich wollte gar nicht mehr aussteigen! Wer halt ´ne Untersetzung braucht, der muß leider zum Schalter greifen, das ist echt ein bißchen doof, war aber ja beim Amarok schon von Anfang an so! Ich würde da auf die Untersetzung verzichten und die tolle Automatik wählen! Die dreimal im Jahr, wo ich eine Untersetzung bräuchte... ich denke, ich würde da auch ohne klarkommen.
) Ich empfand die Probefahrt des neuen Hilux sehr angenehm, wie ja auch ein paar Seiten weiter vorne beschrieben. Aber vergleicht man die beiden rein mal von den Fahrleistungen her und rein subjektiv, dann hat Toyota da keine Chance! Das haben die echt sauber hingekriegt!
