Overlanding Interior Build HZJ78

Beitrag von Otto das Nilpferd »

I bought this 2001 HZJ78 with a pop-up roof one year ago. Roof made by innovation-campers. It was used for a trip to Albania last year and doing well, but the inventory was in bad shape so I tore it out to build a new for this years trip to the Stan-countries and Mongolia. That trip was washed away on the Corona-wave, but the car is ready to go next year.

I have a blog on overlanding with more details:
https://www.inditravel.org/en/overlanding-build-landcuiser-78/
Here are also tips on equipment and travel stories.

Hi Otto,

do you have an Intercooler on your 1HZ turbo conversion? If yes could you share a picture?

Best regards steffen

@steffen_k Re. Intercooler
the previous owner installed a turbo, and since the 1HZ engine don't like it hot I installed an IC.
The IC was ordered from China. You can find the same type in Australian webshops for twice the price.
Perfect fit. I only had to make an extra rod to reduce vibrations.
How good does it work? Hard to say, I did not drive it much without the IC. But I have a temperature gauge fitted to the IC output, and when the thermostat fan starts (fan underneath IC) the temperature drops around 10 degrees. It normally is around 40 degrees when ambient temperature is around 30.

I decided to go for a top mounted because of three things:
1. Easy installation
2. I have air condition.
3. A front mounted IC will heat the radiator and though the engine

in order to prevent engine damage, you need to measure EGT

Yes, I have an EGT. I have set a limit on 550 degrees. It is not a problem on keeping it below this, but you need to keep an eye on the gauge, especially when climbing hills. And select a lower gear. I am used to drive a HDJ80 where this is not a problem. On my trip to Albania last year the engine overheated when doing a long, steep climb up to Theth. The best way to keep temperature down is to switch AC off when the temperature rises.
I must admit that I miss the 1HD-T engine from the 80, but I still have that car also.

Hey Otto,
Very nice car.
May I ask how you painted the roof? Or is it originally black?
And is the roof top site also black? How does this go along with hot areas and heating up?

Cheers Stefan

Thanks Stefan. I am very happy with the car. Nice to be inside the car if bad weather. I was using the 80 with a roof tent before. The 80 is a fantastic car, but limited inside space.

The previous owner painted the car, with rattle-cans I assume. But it is not a good idea as it becomes very hot in the sun. I have tried to soda-blast it off, but that did not work well. So i am going to paint it white when the outside temperature rises. Still a bit cold here in Norway.
