The EV Bubble: Why Tesla, NextEV, Lucid, and Faraday Future are doomed to fail
Conclusion:
Due to reasons associated with market defensibility that provide incumbent automotive OEMs with a distinct advantage (even if they’ve not yet sold a single EV), I do not believe a single one of the new EV players is going to survive long-term. Tesla holds significant value in its charging infrastructure, and has built an enviable brand in a short space of time. In my opinion, it would therefore make an interesting acquisition target, however not at anywhere near the current valuation- and certainly not with SolarCity attached.
If I’m right, a lot of people are going to lose a lot of money in the EV Bubble over the coming few years. While that’s regrettable, I love companies like Tesla, Faraday Future, Atieva/Lucid, and NextEV anyway. Why? Because while the automotive industry today may not be a place where it’s possible to pioneer like Dr Ferdinand Porsche did in the late 1800s and survive, I don't care if it's lunacy or ego that drives these newcomers to think they can. I simply admire the audacity of anyone willing to try. No doubt all will move the industry forward, even if only through the collective experience gained through projects like the NIO EP9. Chances are though that at least a few of them will stumble upon something truly novel on the road to wherever they thought they were going- and it may simply be that innovation that leads to any level of value in the company.
As for Tesla, regardless of what the company is worth once the existing OEMs arrive in the marketplace in the next few years, Elon Musk will go down in history as having played an important role in the widespread adoption of EVs and renewable energy. And after all, that was his stated objective from the outset. As for the rest of the current crop of EV players exhibiting at CES 2017 though, I’m not so sure we'll remember their names in a few years' time.
