2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
Hi all,
does anyone know which diagnostic tool to use for a 2008 HZJ71 4.2D 1HZ ?
after off-roading with lots of water and mud, the engine light suddenly came on, even though the engine runs very well.....
I also made the diagnosis with the Teachstream but for me it is unable to communicate with the control unit, as it even sees ABS/VSC/TRC and SRS Aibag ECU that the car does not have.....
I really don't know which tool to use
thank you

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
Hi Giacomo,
does your engine smoking, did you got water in the airintake during your adventure?
If you have an water strainer in fuel line, open it and drain so long you got pure diesel out.
Change all filters, air and diesel.
Normally the 1HZ engine has no real CAN kommunikation.
Sucess

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
Hi Giacomo,
I am pretty sure the 2008 HZJ7 does not have a way of being diagnosed with a OBD adapter and techstream or any other software like that.
It has very few error codes and they are shown by bridging two pins and looking at the glow indicator light.
What symbol is the engine light? Is it a coil symbol or another symbol (i.e. engine icon)?
The coil symbol looks like this, it's called "Glow Indicator Light":

Hi
my engine no smoking, and I think I didn't inhale water (I have a snorkel)
what does it mean that " 1HZ has no real CAN kommunikation " ?

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
It means you can not use a diagnostic adapter or software. You can only check error codes by the glow indicator light. Can you describe the symbol that flashes / lights up? How does it look?

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
Hi Giacomo,
the 1Hz Engine is technically from 1984 and developed even before.
There was no OBD, everything is mechanically controlled or by relais, not by mainboard.
That makes this engine so reliable, very low possibility for electronically failure.
My HZj78 is from 2014, and no OBD still
You'll need an old school mechanic for that
If there is no water in engine, oil or filters, than it may be a problem in a connection or plug, indicated by moisture.
Good luck, Björn

I know that 1HZ is completely mechanical, but since about 2008 in Italy, in order to be able to sell it, it had to satisfy the Euro 4 standard, so they fitted it with this control unit to be approved......

If you start the engine, does the glow indicator light stay on or does it turn off when the engine is running?

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
If the light goes out, the diagnosis system has not detected a malfunction or abnormality.
It is really odd: I just looked through the service manual for the 2008 HZJ7 and it does not mention the engine check light (MIL) anywhere for the HZJ. Can someone else chime in here? I am out.

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
Question: is it really a motor management computer, or just an EGR management unit (an electrical wire will lead to a valve, clearly visible)? I have one of those in my HZJ78 (prod. 2006, imported in Germany then in the Netherlands). If so, you could try to disconnect the EGR controller (just unplug it) and insert a metal plate to block the recirculation opening. Maybe just unplugging the EGR unit will put you on the right track for a quick diagnose.

Re: 2008 HZJ71 diagnostic
Ahm... this part / Unit is not made or installed by Toyota, as the sticker on it says.
It is from "Huber Fahrzeugtechnik" and has a Serial-Nr 15 ?!!
"EXTREM" was a german company, importing Landcruiser and for that reason, modifying the exhaust-system.
The company has a dubious reputation and does no longer exist.
I don't know for which reason it had been installed, but it was installed by a german importeur to your car, propably
Huber Automotive is a huge group, located around Geislingen/Germany, developing command units for cars, and
to them, this shop belongs:

My 2014 built 1HZ does not have this.
Maybe they can figure out, what this unit is/does?
