Ahm... this part / Unit is not made or installed by Toyota, as the sticker on it says.
It is from "Huber Fahrzeugtechnik" and has a Serial-Nr 15 ?!!

"EXTREM" was a german company, importing Landcruiser and for that reason, modifying the exhaust-system.
The company has a dubious reputation and does no longer exist.
I don't know for which reason it had been installed, but it was installed by a german importeur to your car, propably

Huber Automotive is a huge group, located around Geislingen/Germany, developing command units for cars, and
to them, this shop belongs:

My 2014 built 1HZ does not have this.
Maybe they can figure out, what this unit is/does?

Before 2009 none of the J7 had any means of diagnosis via OBD.
Just a very rudimentary non-digital error diagnosis system for the emissions (!) system (not the engine, the 1HZ does not have a control unit/computer), which would work by bridging two pins and then looking at the coil light flashing in a certain rhythm to show an error code. But your emission system does not recognize a malfunction, if the coil light goes off after the engine started. So no need do dive further into that.

I also suspect it may have something to do with the post-fitted emissons computer thing there. Does your HZJ71 have a ODB port? Can you take a picture and upload?

The service manual for the 2008 HZJ7 does not explain what the engine check light means. This is very odd.

Toyota started fitting OBD and CAN busses from 2009 when all the electrical helpers were introduced (ABS, VSC, TRC, .....)

So I suspect with retrofitting another custom emission unit there may also have been fitted some diagnosis system, which may be OBD compliant, or may be not.

Hi GreyKnight
surely this ecu that controls the exhaust gases and EGR, has not been mounted by the official Toyota, but by this German company to satisfy the Euro4 regulation in order to be approved and sold also in Italy
I also wrote to Huber Fahrzeugtechnik for info on his ECU but no response......

Hi se7en6
you are certainly right, but why does the MIL light stay on ?
and what are the 2 pins to bridge to see any error codes related to emissions ?
thank you
Giacomo
