How small wheels can you put on a 78?

Beitrag von Otto das Nilpferd »

I have a HZJ78 Troopy that currently is fitted with 285/75-16 BFG Mud tires. I dont like them at all. The car is used for overlanding in Europe, Asia and maybe later, Africa. I have been overlanding for 10 years in my old car, a HDJ80 fitted with 285/75-16 BFG AT tires.

First of all, I dont like the Mud pattern. When overlanding I would say 80% of the driving is on gravel or tarmac. The Muds are noisy, but worst of all, braking efficiency is terrible. I guess fuel mileage is also bad. With the 80 and AT's I have been in rather muddy conditions without a stop. Both cars have lockers all around and that of course helps. So Muds go off.
But then, what size? The somewhat provoking title suggest I believe this "biggest size possible" is a hype. I have been reading around, and what seems to be experienced people say skinny tires are the best for all round use, except for glaciers on Iceland. The 78, even with a turbo and IC seems to be to high geared for the 285 size. The problem is that I have never tested skinny tires as both cars where fitted with 285 when i purchased them.
235/85-16 seems to be a good choice, although some say they can be wiggly. Also since my rims are steel 8 inches they are to narrow. Good rims are expensive, so I am thinking on 275/75-16. Or should I get new rims and 235/85?
Getting a spare in Africa can be difficult, but 235/85 is widely available. And they have the same diameter as 265/75 so I guess they can be used in an emergency.
What do you think?

PS. Sorry for not writing in German. I read German, but writing is hard.

Your car had been engineered with 32" tires. That means 7.50 - 16 or metric equal in diameter, 235/85 - 16 or 265/75 -16.
285/75-16 is not far away from 33".
If you want to keep your rims, go to 265/75-16, 235/85 are to narrow for 8" rims. You will get 265/75-16 world wide. 275/75 - 16 is as rare as hens teeth.

If you want to sell the rims, do not hazitate to contact me.

You may buy 6x16 oem steelrims cheap, most chaps change those skinnies first after buying a 70series.

Complete tire&rim combos with the oem supplier 7.50 DUNLOP DESERTDUELER are sold around 400€ up.

I have a set at home, will sell if you pick up in Karlsruhe.

But there will be offers all around north south east and west, too....

Cheers
Flo

well big discussion ;-) bigger tires certainly have their advantages, especially on snow and sand as well as clearance on rock, muddy sections. but they do have their disadvantages. driveabilty and more strain on the drivetrain. so pretty much a tradeoff between, focus on drivability and offroad competence. for me certainly the latter, I run 225 100 r16 on my hdj78. i use the car for overlanding, so most of the driving is on easy stuff, but i do like to put in very difficult sections, and the tires make a HUGHE difference, especially in sand. i like the way it drives on the Highway and pistes, so it works for me..

in the end it's a matter of personal choice and priorities. with respect to MT/AT' i run AT's and i found they are good enough on mud (and better on sand) than MT's. So for a overland vehicle i wouldn't run MT's

with respect to gearing. if you are running a Turbo on your hz and still have the original gearbox, you may want to think about changing it to the 80 gearbox. this will not only swap the weak gearbox for a bullet proof one but would also solve any gearing issues. there are different Options avaiulable, i run my 255 100 16 with the 80 gearbox, and gearing is pretty much back to original spec.

Thank you for feedback. I have decided to go with 265/75-16 and use my old 8" rims. I would have preferred 235/80, but new rims are expensive. 5 new 6,5" Toyota steel rims would cost me 1200 Euro in Norway. Used are impossible to find because there are so few 5 bolt Toyotas in Norway, except for 100's. But those rims do not fit. In Germany they are easy to find, and I might buy a set next time I go to Germany, but uncertain when that will be. I was planning to go to the Stans and Mongolia this year, but that of course have to wait.
Using a 80 gearbox seems like a good idea. But my rig has a brand new gearbox that is working fine. Also without the synch problem..

the original gearbox of the hz models quite often break. due to designs faults. especially with heavy Expedition vehicles. see here. umfrage-hzj-getriebeausfalle-t27458.html

Yes I know. It happened to previous owner after 250.000 km so he fitted a new. So I hope it will hold as long as I have the car.

A very common tyre in South Africa for all HZJ models is the 255/85/16, but as mentioned before they should be mounted on 6.5" rims.
