A question to everybody who put the kit turbo on HZJ 78: have you got any problem with the affidability ? what about overheating?
Problem clutch with turbo?
I going to change the Land110 TD5 with Toy HZJ 78, because the TD5 is not good for African Travels.
ciao
Marco

Hello Marco,
I am really sorry. But I dare to presume, that not just me, but many others really would like to know what exactly happened to your 1 HZ. The last weeks, there was a pretty brisk debate on turbocharged HZJ. Summed up, the result was that a slight charging up to 0,6 bar should be okay and brings no problems with overheating and the weaker engine parts (just compared to the HD-engine) like pistons, con-rods etc., when not using all the engine performance/torque permanently.
So what was the problem with your engine?
And did your gearbox have any problems with the increased torque?
Chin up!
Take care
Jörg

I too was looking at upgrading my HZJ 78 with a turbo.
I have heard of a lot of people doing it in Australia (safari turbo) and I know some people use the Turbo from the ?HD-FT? motor.
I personally would replace the 1HZ with the 1HD. My motor though is still new (60k km) and even though I would like more power, I don't see the point in replacing a perfectly good motor for touring....
If I was racing, that would be a different story.
In Australia people seem to have had good experiences with the turbos - probably because of the 110km/h speed limits...

Just spent some of today doing more reading...
The comments I read basically all agreed that if you add a turbo to your HZJ, ensure that you have an intercooler and something to measure the exhaust temperature.
They basically also made comments about being sure you get someone who knows what they are doing to install and tune it - otherwise you may very likely blow the motor...
Cheers

There are no speed limits in the Northern Territories....)

...but it is crazy to be quicker in the NT.
You can not compare "Travel on Gravel" with a German Autobahn.
I am convinced that Australian Turbo Conversions will work under Australian Conditions, but that will mean no long term high speed sections with heavy load.
